“Matthew Marshall’s lighting is full Rock’n’Roll. It’s drama all the way. If you’ve been to an Ariana or Katy Perry show lately you’ll know what I mean.
The production design reinforces this approach through striking contrast and deliberate theatricality. The set and lighting combine period references with contemporary textures, creating a flexible, kinetic stage space that supports rapid shifts in mood and location. Bold lighting choices energise musical numbers and heighten emotional beats, while the overall visual language embraces anachronism as a feature rather than a flaw. This design sensibility mirrors the show’s themes, signalling that the past is not being discarded, but reworked through a modern lens. This is as much a rock stage as it is a musical one. I just saw Chappell Roan onstage recently and I can easily draw comparisons with her castle set.”
“Matthew Marshall’s concert-style lighting and the crisp sound design transform the St. James into a stadium-level experience.”
Deborah Eve Rea, www.theatreview.org.nz
“This is a production that leans confidently into spectacle. The choreography is high-energy and consistently engaging, driving the show forward with a buoyant sense of fun. The set is both clever and evocative, drawing on a visual language that gestures toward the Shakespearean while embracing a contemporary boldness. Particularly effective is the clarity of the back projection, which provides a series of vivid, well-defined images that enhance rather than overwhelm the action.”
Cushla Matheson, theatreview.org.nz
“Lighting and sound were exactly what you’d expect from a top‑tier production, enhancing the action on stage.”
